I couldn’t have made this album without Cory. I finished it in June. He heard every song except for Cannonball and If You Say So. And I listen to the album now and I’m like oh those drums were in there because he said to raise them at that point, and he suggested this. Every week I would record the songs, I would come home, and we would go into our car because it had the best sound system. And we would listen, and we would like take notes and he really helped me with the record so, so, so much. He was such a genius when it came to music, so I really- I owe a lot to him.

I only have happy memories of Cory. He was not his addiction — unfortunately, it won. But that wasn’t who he was. Cory made me feel like a queen every day. From the minute he said, ‘I’m your boyfriend,’ I loved every day, and I thank him for being the best boyfriend and making me feel so beautiful.

It’s really about making that commitment in your relationship. I’m so grateful to get to say that I experienced true love and I think that a lot of people unfortunately don’t. They’ll go a whole lifetime without this experience. I did and I consider myself so lucky. It takes me back to the best time of my life, so whenever I need to remember that, I play that song.

I have not talked about ‘If You Say So’ yet. It’s about my last conversation that I had with him. I spoke to a woman who lost her son, and she mentioned how grateful she was that the last words she said to her son before he died were, ‘I love you.’ Mine were that as well. [The song] is just about that. There are lots of different emotions—if you could see this person again, what are the things you would want to say to them? It’s a personal story.

I listen to it now, and obviously life is different now, but still brings me such joy, and it makes me so happy and it just reminds me of a such a beautiful time in my life. People often don’t get to experience real, wonderful love, and I’ve had a pretty intense and horrendous 2013, but I listen to that song and it reminds me that I had the amazing pleasure of experiencing real love.
