you know what really pisses me off??? people who can’t tell the difference between dark!betty and discovering my sexuality!betty. they are two VERY different things. let’s use last episode for example. betty was wearing her wig and that bra aka her ‘dark’ betty costume. THAT WAS NOT DARK BETTY. she used that costume to have a fun time and discover her sexuality with her boyfriend. someone who she loves and trusts. dark!betty is shown when she is in a bad mental state and uses the persona as an out, while making bad decisions and risking herself. that was NOT the case in 2×14. please know the difference.
THANK YOU OH MY GOD
She literally said she brought it in case he needed a distraction! That should tell everyone it was more for fun/sexual pleasure than any mental health issues. She thought about it in advance, decided he might enjoy it and took it with her in case. No dark Betty here.
But guys, that is exactly the problem. The fact that she uses the same outfit when dark!Betty emerges and when she’s trying to discover her sexuality, therefore linking them, is profoundly disturbing. It romanticizes, not to mention sexualizes, mental illness and that is NOT okay. She put the same outfit on when almost boiling a man and when having sex with her boyfriend and even acknowledges it and it’s portrayed as perfectly normal. That is not okay. At all.
She wasn’t having a DarkBetty moment. Just because she wore the same outfit does not mean she is “sexualizing mental illness.” And to say that is, quite frankly, ridiculous. She was enjoying a fun, sexy moment with her boyfriend – not experiencing a dark betty moment. This just seems like grasping at straws honestly on your part.
except that it is her. she’s been making questionable decisions in the name of protecting the people she loves before her and jug even started dating. her relationship with jughead didn’t create her “dark” side. betty tortured chuck in the hot tub long before jughead joined the serpents. if you don’t blame polly or veronica for what she did to chuck, how can you blame jughead for her threatening cheryl or stripping? he had no idea she was going to do either of those things. i’d agree with you if jughead was encouraging that behavior, but he isn’t. he’s not hindering her development or destroying any progress she’s made. betty has behaved like that on and off since we first met her. it’s not something that started with jughead or is exclusive to him, and he’s not egging it on
